DIY tye die top

watch the video above to see what I did!

what you need:

  • one white top
  • tye die: i used a tie dye kit by Jacquard which included 3 bottles of dye, one extra bottle to mix colours!, rubber bands, gloves, soda ash and a really good how-to DVD (link will be below)
  • a bucket
  • some plastic bags or whatever you want to use to protect your working place

what you do:
  • solve your soda ash in the required amount of water. you don't need to use all of it for one top but you can save the dissolution for about two weeks
  • put your fabric into your soda ash and let it soak for about 20 minutes. this step helps to keep the colours from fading or bleeding.
  • take it out, rinse it and let it dry about 80-90%. I would not recommend starting to dye when your fabric is still wet!
  • now you can use the rubber bands and place them wherever or however you want on your top, depending on which design you want to achieve! (I used them to create a couple of circles and then scrunched the rest of the fabric together and sealed that "mess" with some more rubber bands.)
  • time to paint! start by mixing your colours: fill the applicator bottles with water, accoring to the instructions. give it a good shake and you can start dying your shirt.
  • I went ahead and basically dyed most of my top purple. I started out with red and then went over it again with blue. the little "ears" became simply red and blue. you can choose whatever colours you like and even mix your very own colour using the extra applicator bottle in your kit. (tip: maybe wear clothes you don't mind getting "ruined". it might happen that you get some sprinkles on your shirt or something.)
  • let the whole thing sit for at least 12-24 hours
  • now you can either rinse your shirt under cold water until no more dye is coming out of it. or you can go straight to washing it: I washed it by hand because I was afraid it might ruin some of my other clothes.
  • let it dry, and you're done!
